Au pair driving

Will your Nanny or Au Pair be driving around Canberra with your children?

People from other countries who take up residence in the ACT must obtain an ACT Driver Licence to drive a motor vehicle or motorbike.

When an overseas driver moves to the ACT your current overseas licence or International Driving Permit is valid for only three months.

Many Canberra families are employing Nannies and Au Pairs to assist with home based child care. This inevitably requires the use of the family car for transportation of children to/from school, sports, shops and other activities.

Not all overseas trained drivers may be familiar with our laws, roads, driving on the right side of the road etc. It is also true that in many larger cities, a licensed driver may also not have very much driving experience as public transport is the primary mode of transport.

Therefore, it may be prudent to have your new Au Pair or Nanny assessed by a qualified driver trainer to determine that the standard of driving is suitable to our conditions, and that the nanny is familiar with the family car to ensure safe driving.

At National Driving Academy we have lots of experience teaching mature learners and non-learners seeking refresher training.

We have developed a methodology for assessing adult drivers against our driver standards.

Our key areas of assessment are:

Rudimentary Skills

  • PRE DRIVE
  • CABIN DRILL
  • VEHICLE OPERATION SKILLS
  • MANOEUVRES

Essential to long term safety of self, others and property

  • SYSTEM OF VEHICLE CONTROL
  • SAFE DRIVING BEHAVIOR
  • SPEED
  • ROAD LAW

Higher order operating

  • OTHER VEHICLES
  • HIGH RISK SITUATIONS
  • SMOOTH OPERATOR
  • DRIVING CONDITIONS

We also offer any refresher training required to supplement the existing skills of the overseas driver to meet Australian standards.

Customer Feedback

Feedback for our Northside & Central Canberra instructor Babar from Bethany, Watson:

"I needed to get my au pair from Italy familiarised with driving on the left-hand side. I booked three sessions for her and was really pleased with approach Babar took. He was punctual, professional and provided me great feedback on the lesson progression, her competencies and what requirements she'd have to fulfil to meet international licence and insurance. I'll be using him for the au pair!"
